OUT-OF-TOWN
STUDENTS
Living and studying in the same city is becoming a luxury for out-of-town students due to soaring housing costs. A Udu survey shows 62% of students struggle with housing, spending up to 80% of their budget on rent. Single rooms cost €300–€747 in cities like Milan and Rome, driven by unregulated markets and Airbnb. Rents rose 7% nationwide in 2023, with Milan averaging €637. Short-term rentals worsen the crisis, and more university housing is urgently needed. Rising costs push students toward cheaper southern universities, where enrolments grew 4.2%.
